School Visits:
I started teaching high school in 1994, and since then, I have taught high school and middle school English in Skokie IL, Bellevue WA, and Seattle. Talking about books and writing with teenagers is the best job in the world.
I'd LOVE to come to your school, either in person or via a Zoom visit. I can talk about being a writer, offer creative writing workshops, speak about the grit and resilience required to become an author, or discuss the adventure of living well with a mental health condition. And if you are looking for something unexpected, I can teach students and teachers a few mime skits. (Lucy, the narrator of Lucy in Between, inspired me to learn).
Book Clubs:
I have been in the same book club since 2001, and I would love to visit yours, whether it's a book club for adults who enjoy novels for teens, a book club for teens who enjoy stories about teens, or a book club for parents and teens who, generally, like to spend time with each other. I LOVE talking about books, stories, and the characters who fill those stories.
Mental Health Conversations:
I, along with many relatives, have a mental health diagnosis (mine is bipolar 2 disorder). I believe that speaking about mental health and sharing stories about how we manage our mental health brings hope (and empathy) to those who also struggle. Stories really do save lives! Plus, I find that life's a lot better when we realize we're not The Only One.
